Actively involved in international cooperation
SPEK monitors the activities of fire and rescue associations and preparedness and civil defence organisations in different countries. The cornerstones of our Nordic cooperation are preparedness and civil defence, accident prevention, research and development, and safety-related campaigns and communication.
We are a member of the Finnish national committee of the international association of fire and rescue services CTIF. In addition, we are responsible for the administration and finances of the committee’s Finnish operations. We are a member of the cooperation organisations of both the European (CFPA-E) and International (CFPA-I) firefighting associations.
We are also a founding member of the European Voluntary Civil Protection Forum EVCPF.

EU advocacy
We are active at the EU level. We work to promote the adoption of Europe-wide fire safety practices and standards and influence the regulations concerning crisis preparedness and the third and fourth sectors.
We contribute to the legislative work of our sector and to the promotion of safety within the European Union.
Among other forums, we participate in the Fire Information Exchange Platform of the European Commission and in the work of the Community for European Research and Innovation for Security (CERIS) of European fire safety researchers.
We also cooperate with other European organisations, such as Fire Safe Europe (FSEU), Fire Safety Alliance – EuroFSA and the European Fire Sprinkler Network.
Nordic cooperation
The guiding principle of our Nordic cooperation is that civil society has an important role in the Nordic countries. As such, an active civil society is also important for the development of the fire and rescue sector.
We cooperate in the areas of preparedness and civil defence, accident prevention, research and development, and safety-related campaigns and communication.
Our partners and important stakeholders are Civilförsvarförbundet and Brandforsk in Sweden, Beredskabsforbund and DBI in Denmark, and FORF, the confederation of fire and rescue associations in Norway. We also cooperate with the Icelandic Association for Search And Rescue (ICE-SAR).
